Making Space For Learning

During the past few lessons I have taught in my grade 4 practicum classroom I have noticed something that makes me smile.

After giving students a task to do, I ask them to find a space and get to work. The spot does not matter as long as they are comfortable and able to do their work without straining themselves.

It is quite amazing to watch a group of  students get their stuff together, chat for a moment and then find their space. Some students prefer to sit at their desks, others on the carpet, others in the hallway and some at the big classroom table.  Some students will always move to the same spot. Others may change their spot depending on the day.

But, once the room has gone quieter, I can look over and see wherever the kids have chosen to sit, that they happily working hard in their own learning space.
